The Impact of COVID-19 on Education

How has COVID-19 affected education in the Kakuma refugee camp and your own educational pursuits?

All schools in Kakuma are closed until further notice.

Any gatherings require that face masks are worn, especially when small study groups are meeting.

How have your needs changed since the COVID-19 pandemic?

Learning outside of schools has shifted to other platforms. Now, students must listen to teacher facilitated lessons from Antanayede radios and Bibila Husema programs in their homes.

Learner’s needs have changed as students cannot share textbooks and must purchase their own due to social distancing regulations.

Teacher’s needs have changed as education areas or blocks are now required to have sanitizers, face masks and liquid soaps available in order to minimize the spread of COVID-19.

The heavy rains in the camp have also made movement challenging for students and teachers.

What are you worried about with the school year reopening in Kakuma?

Lack of access to adequate supplies of sanitizers for both teachers and students.

Low numbers of attendance in the classrooms as only 15 students are allowed in one room at a time.

Enforcing the face mask, liquid soap and social distancing regulations inside the classroom will present challenges for all.
